Club's Athletes win medals at Scottish Schools

Posted by Nobody on 7 February 2016

The Emirates arena in Glasgow was the venue this week for the Rotary Scottish Schools Indoor Championships. Arbroath & District were well represented with a total of 9 athletes performing well for 3 schools over the two days of competition. The indoor championships operates two age groups, under and over 16's and this was the first chance for a number of our athletes to take part at this level. Wednesday saw the first two of the four medals which were won by our athletes. Brother and Sister Joel and Iona McFarlane both won medals in their under 16 pole vault events, with Joel winning the silver medal with a new personal best of 3.20m and Iona picking up the bronze with a vault of 2.15m just short of her pb. Iona also had a good performance in the shot putt with a best of 8.30m. In the over 16’s 200m race there was a fine run by Liam Fotheringham with a new pb of 22.92 which was the equal fastest run in the boys heats, unfortunately Liam had to pull up in the semi-finals due to an injury. Eilidh De Klerk also had a good run in the girl’s race with a time of 26.84, missing out on the final by 1 place. The club was also represented by another set of siblings with Sarah and Daniel Smart both running well in their respective U16‘s 200m races, Daniel timed at 25.79 and Sarah at 32.23.

Thursday saw further medal success for the club where Joel McFarlane repeated his gold medal success from 2015 retaining his sprint hurdles title with a pb of 8.50 in the under 16 boys final. Joel then went on to complete a unique hat-trick of medals at these Championships by leaping to the silver medal in the boys long jump competition with 6.33m. The hurdles also saw good runs from Megan Gowans, 10.90 in the U16's and Aillie Townsend, 10.59 and Alix Small, 10.89 in the O16's heats. There were also fine performances in the 60m sprints from Sarah Smart, 9.60 and Daniel Smart, 8.04. Iona McFarlane also had a good high jump with a pb of 1.46m.

Well done to all our athletes who have represented the club so well.
